A new book from Solid Ground hoping to be published – but they need enough pre-pub sales to commit to it.

I’d love to get some recommendations on history books in general – which ones are the best in giving overviews of certain time periods (not just U.S.)?

George Bancroft (October 3, 1800 – January 17, 1891) was an American historian and statesman who was prominent in promoting secondary education both in his home state and at the national level. During his tenure as U.S. Secretary of the Navy, he established the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1845. Among his best-known writings is this magisterial series, History of the United States, from the Discovery of the American Continent.

    This is a major work. I’ve been trying, over the years, to get Library of America to publish it. Bancroft, by the way, was one of the several major historians who stated, in so many words, that John Calvin was the true founding father of America.

    Regarding your request, the choices are obviously going to be very numerous, but it may be best to think in terms of scale like first reading a good universal history of the world (J. M. Roberts is a good modern one, he is not a leftist revisionist, something that has corrupted much of modern day works of history, by the way).

    That gives an overview. (And along with a history of the world is geography in general, and maybe even astronomy to get that ultimate perspective of where we are in space.)

    Then scale down from there. Like, major historical cultures/civilizations (Roman Empire, Europe, China, etc.) Then individual regions of the world perhaps. Then individual countries.

    The classical historians are in a different category. Herodotus, Thucydides, Plutarch, Tacitus, then on up to Machiavelli, Gibbon, etc., they give understanding of human nature and the ways of the world.

    There is a category of ‘philosophies of history’. Hegel, Spengler, Augustine (City of God), other I can’t recall at the moment.

    There is a popular new publishing category called ‘micro histories’, I’ll mention as an aside. These have titles such as the History of Salt. The History of Wood. Etc.

    Biography and autobiography are of course a category of history.

    Also, if it is people, places, things, events, ideas there will be a history written of it.

    Histories of the majors influences in our world can be listed fairly easily: History of Art, History of Music, History of Science, History of Religion, History of Philosophy, History of Literature, and History of History (which would be those philosophies of history mentioned above).

    The best book I read last year was Comrades: A History of World Communism, by Robert Service.

    One big, foundational area of history to really learn well is liberty vs. tyranny. 10 Books Every Conservative Must Read, by Benjamin Wiker is a good starting off place for that (though he is horrible on the Bible, but he’s not a theologian). Don’t let the title put you off, if it does. He is very good at delineating the mechanics of liberty and the mechanics of tyranny through his discussions of the ten books in question.
