Lawrence Hunter, columnist at Forbes.com, wrote and article arguing that psychiatric drugs are a common denominator in high profile mass shootings like the one at Sandy Hook. He quotes 2000 New York Senate Bill 7035:
There is a large body of scientific research establishing a connection between violence and suicide and the use of psychotropic drugs in some cases. This research, which has been published in peer reviewed publications such as the American Journal of Psychiatry, The Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and The Journal of Forensic Science, has shown, among other things, that: certain drugs can induce mania (a psychosis which can produce bizarre, grandiose and highly elaborated destructive plans, including mass murder);. . .and certain drugs can produce an acute psychotic reaction in an individual not previously psychotic.
Most of the nation has spent the last month discussing and debating what happened at Sandy Hook and why. As you gathered together with family for Christmas and then returned to work, I’m sure you have all had at least one, if not many conversations with people about guns.
But how many conversations have you had with people about other possible contributing factors to murderous rampages such as psychiatric drugs? None? And as most media outlets have been talking non-stop about gun control, have you heard even one single mention of the two words “psychiatric drugs”? Why not? Even if you don’t think there is causation, if we’re trying to really understand and prevent these things, shouldn’t this glaring correlation be talked about?
Forbes.com doesn’t think so. They deleted Hunter’s column shortly after it was posted and started going viral. Here’s what you’ll find if you try to access the page now: http://www.forbes.com/sites/lawrencehunter/2013/01/14/psychiatric-drugs-not-a-lack-of-gun-control-are-the-common-denominator-in-murderous-violence/
Here’s more info on the removal: http://dailycaller.com/2013/01/16/forbes-withdraws-online-essay-blaming-psychiatric-medications-for-sandy-hook-shooting/
Again, even if it might only be a correlation (which I doubt), why not talk about? Why the absolute silence in light of the absolutely raging discussion about guns?
Here’s an old clip from 2003
A month or two ago we say the song “O Great God” at church. I did a little googling and found the music was written by Bob Kauflin of Sovereign Grace Music, with words coming from the “Valley of Vision” puritan prayers volume. I didn’t particularly like the Sovereign Grace recorded version, so I did a bit more googling and found this amazing version arranged by Dan Forrest.
I also found out that Dan Forrest is giving a free (I think) concert at Masters College this Friday

Gautier police say two men arrested in home invasion also led neighborhood paramilitary group

GAUTIER, Mississippi — Two men described as the commander and captain of a neighborhood para-military group in north Gautier were arrested Tuesday and charged with home invasion and kidnapping after three people were attacked in their home in the 1700 block of Dailey Road.
Gautier Police Detective Sgt. Matthew Hoggatt identified those arrested as Michael Shaun Schaffran, 32, of the 1600 block of Dailey Road, and Cody Jacob Rogers, 18, of the 7300 block of Francis Street.
Shaffran, recently from Arizona and tagged as the commander, has a lengthy criminal history that includes felony convictions for theft, forgery and aggravated assault, Hoggatt said.
Schaffran had a knife at the time of his arrest, police stated in a news release. Rogers was not armed.
The victims were a man and woman in their 30s and a 70-year-old man, said Capt. Kenny McMellon.
Schafran and Rogers led four neighborhood youths, ages ranging from 16 to 18, in hand-to-hand combat, reconnaissance, para-military operations and Bible scripture reading.
The “training” was taking place in woods in the neighborhood, McMellon said.
The group had a manual and members held ranks in the organization, he said in a news conference Wednesday at the Gautier City Hall.
Hoggatt stated in a news release that the two were acting as members of “The Savior Unit” or “Tactical Support Unit.”
The two men were arrested at about 8 p.m. Tuesday after Gautier police responded to a report of a home invasion at a residence on Dailey Road, Hoggatt stated.
Detective Jonathan Whitfield said the three victims suffered bruises and was moved out the house against their will to the front yard where they forced to kneel.
One of the victims managed to run away and make the 911 call, he said.
The attackers were attired in a bullet-resistance vest and military garb, police said.
Hoggatt said police know of no connection between the victims and attackers.
“There is some conflicting information why this happened here,” he said. “But there is no indication the victims had any wrongdoing.
“Last night, there was no record of any police responses to their house in the past and there is no indication that they were doing anything illegal. So, that‚s part of what this investigation is to determine why there were targeted.”
McMellon said the group had come to attention of police a few days ago and tips were obtained as police investigated 18 burglaries that occurred in south Gautier last week.
McMellon said a link to the Tuesday’s arrests and the burglaries had not been made.
The burglaries involved kicking doors in, as did Tuesday’s Daily Road home invasion.
“Some of the tips about this group came in reference to those activities,” McMellon said. “Some of the tips and information we received put a spotlight on this group. We haven’t connected the dots yet.”
McMellon said an operation manual for the group was found and included the following statement:
“T.S.U. is a tactical search team that is faith based. Our purpose is to promote Christ. Obtain offenders who are a danger to society, do community service work for churches and halfway houses, and do security for different functions. Our training is a recon and infiltration, apprehension and retrieval. All team members are taught hand to hand combat skills, para military training and scriptures.”
McMellon said the group had been in existence for six weeks.
“You can use your imagination and speculate where was this headed, what could have happened, what might have happened,” he said.
McMellon and other officers said nothing similar had occurred in Gautier before.
Hoggatt said police are working with federal authorities to determine if federal violations have occurred.
“We don‚t know if there is any linkage to other groups,” Hoggatt said. “Nothing would surprise me at this point. You think you’ve seen it all and then you see something like this.”
Detective Danny Patrick said, “You look at a situation like this and you really don’t know where it could have gone to.”
Schaffran and Rogers were taken to the Jackson County Adult Detention Center.
Bail had not been set on the two as of Wednesday‚s news conference.
Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact the Gautier Police Department at 228-497-2486 or Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers.

11 months ago I made a post about John Delling. Take a look at that post for the story. I went to high school with John Delling. Over a year ago he went on a rampage and murdered two people, and attempted to murder a third. One of the victims was Dave Boss, who I went to elementary, junior high, and high school with. Delling had a lot of problems and Dave was one of the few people who cared about him, and Delling shot him for it.
The courts have spent a year deciding if Delling was fit to stand trial (see my previous post for details). They have finally decided that he is fit, so things are slowly proceeding. Now, Delling’s attorney is trying for the insanity plea, even though you can’t use the insanity defense in Idaho.
That didn’t stop Delling’s attorney, public defender Gus Cahill, from filing a motion last week telling 4th District Judge Deborah Bail that he planned to put on psychological evidence during the upcoming trial that “Delling was incapable of forming mens rea” at the time of Morse’s murder.
Mens rea is a legal term for malice aforethought – the thoughts and intentions behind a wrongful act, including knowledge that the act is illegal, according to a legal definition provided by Princeton University. In Latin, mens rea is literally “guilty mind.”
How could John Delling not have a guilty mind? Sin. The effect of sin on the mind is extensive. We are all born totally depraved.
All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
no one does good,
not even one.”
“Their throat is an open grave;
they use their tongues to deceive.”
“The venom of asps is under their lips.”
“Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.”
“Their feet are swift to shed blood;
in their paths are ruin and misery,
and the way of peace they have not known.”
“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
Now, Delling might very well think he is innocent of the blood on his hands. Does that mean that he is in fact innocent? No. Consider, if you will, your guilt. Many of you, no doubt, believe you are innocent of your guilt before a holy God because, quite simply, you do not believe there is a God. You have no mens rea. Yet the same reason that Delling is guilty and deserves justice at the hands of the state is exactly the same reason you are guilty and deserve justice before God’s throne:
the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Though they know God’s decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them. (Romans 1)
Note that envy and murder are of equal offense before God. My covetousness, my jealousy of you and the things you have, is an affront to a holy God who has shown me the wickedness of such thoughts. Can you read that list and come away with a clean conscience? If not, then you are damned, just as John Delling is. No one may use the excuse that they do not know such things are wrong, because “God has shown it to them.” You “show that the work of the law is written on [your] heart, while [your] conscience also bears witness, and [your] conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse [you] on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.” (Romans 2:15-16)
Though this law is written on the heart of every man, not every man acknowledges it. Rather, you and John Delling suppress that truth in unrighteousness. Far from proving your innocence, your lack of conscience is proof of your guilt: Since you did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave you up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. And if you object that you do have a conscience, that you do believe such things are wrong, then you have condemned yourself, for if they are wrong, why do you do them?
Now you, John Delling, and myself must face the judgment of God. It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment (Hebrews 9:27). We will face an eternal sentence for our crime. But that time is not yet. The Idaho courts are not the throne of God. The judges dispensing justice are not God. What then are they to do? How are they to judge Delling?
After God saw that the thoughts of man were only evil continually, and God destroyed the earth through a flood, saving only Noah and 7 others, God made a covenant with Noah. As we are all descendents of these 8 people, the covenant remains binding on us. Part of it reads:
…For your lifeblood I will require a reckoning: from every beast I will require it and from man. From his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man.
“Whoever sheds the blood of man,
by man shall his blood be shed,
for God made man in his own image.
Delling deserves death because he murdered Dave Boss. The sentence is not primarily concerned with the criminal, it is primarily concerned with upholding the image of God in creation. Delling deserves death, not because Dave was an innocent human being (before God he was not), but because Dave bore the image of God and Delling sought to destroy that image.
To prove this point, make note that God requires a reckoning from every man and from every beast. In Exodus 21, as God laid out his law for Israel, he commanded that “When an ox gores a man or a woman to death, the ox shall be stoned.” Delling’s attorney, if he were representing such an ox, would likely argue that the ox “was incapable of forming mens rea.” Yet such a plea would go unheard. For the command is clear:
“Whoever sheds the blood of man,
by man shall his blood be shed,
for God made man in his own image.
Just as Delling must be killed in order to satisfy the injustice of murdering Dave Boss, an image bearer of God, so too must you be destroyed eternally in order to satisfy the injustice of your rebellion against a holy God.
2 Thessalonians 2:1 Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we ask you, brothers, 2 not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by a spirit or a spoken word, or a letter seeming to be from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. 3 Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, 4 who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. 5 Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? 6 And you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming. 9 The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, 10 and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, 12 in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
Roman Catholics on the Papacy
Lord Acton: “I cannot accept your canon that we are to judge Pope and King unlike other men, with a favourable presumption that they did no wrong. If there is any presumption it is the other way, against holders of power, increasing as the power increases. Historic responsibility has to make up for the want of legal responsibility. Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority: still more when you superadd the tendency or the certainty of corruption by authority. There is no worse heresy than that the office sanctifies the holder of it…. For many years my view of Catholic controversy has been governed by the following chain of reasoning: 1. A crime does not become a good deed by being committed for the good of a church. 2. The theorist who approves the act is no better than the culprit who commits it. 3. The divine or historian who defends the theorist incurs the same blame…. To commit murder is the mark of a moment, exceptional. To defend it is constant, and shows a more perverted conscience” (quoted by John Robbins, “Acton on the Papacy,” The Trinity Review Number 89, July 1992:2).
Lord Acton: “The papacy contrived murder and massacre on the largest and also on the most cruel and inhuman scale. They [the popes] were not only wholesale assassins but they made the principle of assassination a law of the Christian Church and a condition of salvation…. [The Papacy] is the fiend skulking behind the Crucifix” (quoted by John Robbins, “Acton on the Papacy,” The Trinity Review Number 89, July 1992:4).
W. F. Strojie: “I am convinced that it is theologically necessary that Antichrist must be a pope…. Antichrist, the Man of Sin, Son of Perdition to deserve these titles must hold a unique office, one in which the greatest possible doctrinal, disciplinary, and moral corruption can be accomplished…. With due respect for possible non-Catholic claimants I scoff at the notion that anyone other than a pope could be the Antichrist” (W. F. Strojie, Last Days of the Catholic Church, 1978, 31).
The American Founders and the Papacy
Sam Adams felt that “much more is to be dreaded from the growth of popery in America than from the Stamp Act.” And an author of The Federalist and future Chief Justice of the United States, John Jay, did his best to deny Catholics the right of citizenship. Harvard College had the Dudleian Lectures, the fourth in each series to be devoted to “detecting, convicting, and exposing the idolatry, errors, and superstitions of the Romish Church.” The Continental Congress which met at Philadelphia on September 17, 1775, took as its own by unanimous vote, the “Suffolk County Resolves,” framed a week earlier in Boston, which denounced the May 20 Quebec Act, “the late act of Parliament for establishing the Roman Catholic religion in that extensive country now called Canada.” This act was “dangerous in an extreme degree to the Protestant religion and to the civil rights and liberties of all Americans” (Sidney Ahlstrom, Religious History of the American People, 1972).
“Shall we recognize the Apostolic See where we see nothing but horrible apostasy? Shall he be the vicar of Christ who, by his furious efforts in persecuting the Gospel plainly declares himself to be Antichrist? Shall he be the successor of Peter, who goes about with fire and sword demolishing everything that Peter built? Shall he be the head of the Church who, after dissevering the Church from Christ, her only true Head, tears and lacerates her members? Rome, indeed, was once the mother of all the churches, but since she began to be the seat of Antichrist she ceased to be what she was” (Institutes of the Christian Religion, Book IV: Chapter VII: Paragraph 24).

“In April 2007, the Chinese government secretly released a list of 43 types of people in 11 categories who will be barred from the Olympic Games. The document is entitled “Notice on Strict Background Check on Applicants for the Olympic Games and the Test Events.” One of the 11 banned categories of people is “Religious extremists and religious infiltrators,” which is defined as:
1. Members of illegal religious organizations both in China and abroad;
2. Members who have been caught by Chinese authorities for engaging the illegal religious activities;
3. People who have given illegal sermons;
4. People who illegally distribute religious publications and video/audio materials;
5. People who have illegally established religious organizations, institutions, schools, sermon sites and other religious entities.
One person who has been on the government’s unofficial blacklist is Pastor Hua Huiqi. He lives only 10 minutes from the Olympic village and the police welded the door of his house shut with his family inside. He and his family have been jailed, harassed and beaten for hosting a church in their home. His mother is currently still in prison.” www.PrisonerAlert.com
